Ambro Poker Page Ambro 15 - October 22, 2005 A letter from the Tournament director:
The 15th Ambro
Texas Hold Em Tournament (the last of 2005 and maybe of all
time) was held this past Saturday. A few tournaments ago, we
had a Greek invasion. Not this time.....we had the Italian
invasion in this tournament. Nunzio, Rocco and Carmine were
all first timers to the Ambro tourneys. This tournament
had many newcomers (12). First to be eliminated for a
2nd time this year was Tim. He lost having
a full house to a bigger full house....that hurts. He last a
little under an hour. (7:21PM) The tournament started at
6:34PM. Next to go was former champ from Ambro 13, Mike Sw.
He came in looking to become a 2 time champ, but that was
not to be. He was out at 7:30PM. Placing 33rd and 32nd
respectively were 2 former winners, Nick and Tony. It was
not a good showing for former champions at this point.
The All In
Table Award goes to Table 3. The first hour alone, there
must have been at least 15 "all ins". The problem was that
the person that was all in kept winning the hand and staying
alive. Nelson was the man of nine lives as he kept surviving
his all ins. Svet couldn't say no to someone moving all in
and was doubling up a lot of people. He was able to afford
it though because he kept flopping sets and taking huge
amounts of chips from people. Nelson's run ended when Svet
finally won an all in against him. Nelson placed 34th. Svet
next eliminated former champion Nick.(33rd) Matt S., who was
the previous winner of the Ambro tournament and was looking
to win back to back, was moved to Table 3. He sits down and
raises preflop. It comes around to the "Call Station", Svet
and he calls the raise. The flop comes 5-8-K I believe. Matt
S. goes all in. What does Svet do....he calls with a J-5 in
his hand. Matt S. was bluffing with AQ I believe and the 5's
held up. Svet eliminated another former champion. Matt S.
finished 27th. No back to back titles for him.
4 time
winner Whip put on a quiet performance on Saturday.
He placed 22nd and disappeared into the night. Next to go
unfortunately was me. I think I played maybe 5 hands the
entire night. The cards I got all night were horrible. I had
pocket pairs once and they were 2's. I happened to be at the
infamous Table 3 and saw all the former champions go down
there. My table was even roughing me up....asking when I was
going to play a hand. I finally see an Ace and move all in.
Svet calls me of course and ends up winning the hand. I
placed 21st and couldn't get away from the run of bad cards.
Well,
Svet's run finally came to an end. He placed 18th, but
I don't know the hand that beat him. I was monitoring
another table. I know he lost to newcomer Mike (yes, another
Mike) and Mike was creating a nice chip stack. So nice, it
brought him to the final table.
Former
champion, Mike S. (Ambro 9) was in contention with George L.
for 2005 Player of The Year. Mike had to finish ahead of
George by a few spots to win the award (Player of the Year
wins free entry into the first tournament of the 2006
Season-if there will be one) Mike S. finished in 10th place
and George L. placed 9th clinching the award for George L.
Congrats to George for winning 2005 Player Of The Year. In
the 4 tournaments of 2005, he placed 2nd, 18th, 2nd and
10th.
After
George was eliminated, we had our final table. It consisted
of the following people:
Angela - 2nd
final table appearance
Christian -
newcomer
Dino - former
champion (Ambro 5) and 4th final table appearance
Gary - 2nd
final table appearance
Harry - 2nd
final table appearance
Jim - first
final table appearance
Mark A. -
newcomer
Mike -
newcomer
The final
table started at around 10:55PM. Gary was the first to go
and he placed 8th(11:20PM) At this point, Jim had collected
a huge amount of chips. He was just sitting pretty bullying
people around. Next to go was Angela. She put on another
strong performance showing patience throughout the event
(7th place-11:27PM) Next to go was newcomer Mike. He did
have a lot of chips before coming to the final table, but
they soon diminished and he placed 6th.(11:52). Dino was
short stacked the entire tournament and finally won a few
nice pots at the final table, but it wasn't enough as he
placed 5th(12:22) Within 5 minutes after Dino was
eliminated, we were going to have heads up play. Newcomer
Christian was next to go as he placed 4th(12:24AM). 2
minutes later, newcomer, Mark A. was busted out.(3rd
place-12:26AM. So, now it comes down to Jim and Harry. Going
into heads up, Jim had about 23,000 in chips to Harry having
13,000. Jim was collecting chips all night. I don't remember
seeing him short stacked at all throughout the evening. He
played some good poker and won some big hands all night. Jim
was trying to take Harry out preflop by moving all in when
he was the small blind. Harry kept folding waiting for the
right hand to make his move. Well, Harry's patience worked
out as he became the chip leader on the following hand.
After the flop came K-10-4, Harry moved all in with K5. Jim
called his all in with Q10. The kings held up and Harry was
now the chip leader. After a few more hands, it came down to
the final hand....with blinds at 400-800, Jim moves all in
with K4. Harry calls with A10. Flop comes up 3-5-5. Turn
card is a great card for Jim.....a King. Jim is about to
double up and the two would be about even in chips.....but
it was not to be as the river card was the Ace. Harry is our
new champion. Congrats to Harry on winning Ambro 15!!!! The
funny thing is that before the tournament started, I went up
to Harry and roughed him up for his poor 2005 showing in
the previous 3 Ambro Tournaments....I guess he showed me!
Well, that
about sums up the evening. I hope everyone had a good time.
Thanks to Penny and Joann for being wonderful waitresses and
thanks to Jen A. for being a tough pit boss. Congrats again
to George L. for winning 2005 Player Of The Year. I will
keep you all posted on when the website is updated with the
stats(www.officepools101.com)
and if there will be any tournaments in 2006. Rumor has it
that Ambro 15 was the last one for good.....time will tell.
As always, attached is the winning hand and the picture of
the champion.
- Mike
